TEXAS AIRPORT GETS TWO ITEMS ON ‘WISH LIST’
The Liberty Municipal Airport in Liberty, Texas, held a ceremonial ground-breaking May 20 for two grant-funded projects that will begin to take the airport on the path to revival. AOPA Airport Support Network ( http://www.aopa.org/asn?WT.mc_id=090529epilot&WT.mc_sect=ast ) volunteer Linda Street-Ely and her pilot husband Mike attended the ground-breaking to celebrate the start of runway light installation and drainage projects, two desperately needed items on a long wish list. "It’s exciting to see the public interest that has been generated in seeing this asset go to work for the good of South Liberty County," Street-Ely said. “The Liberty Airport is an important part of the national airspace program and vital to our state’s economy and our national defense,” she said, “and this kind of progress is encouraging, and we look forward to great things to come at the Liberty Airport.”
Members of the City of Liberty City Council along with representatives from the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce, the City of Ames, The County of Liberty and many of the memberso f the City of Liberty Airport Advisory Committee were present at the ground breaking ceremony. Hurricane Ike Damage Clean-Up
While cleanup has been slow, it is progressing. The debris from the destroyed hangars has been mostly removed. Several of the destroyed airplanes have also been removed. The doors on the main, big red hangar have been rehung and the doors on the smaller red hangar have been reskinned and rehung.
The Self-Serve Fuel System is operational. Call ahead for fuel availability and plan a reserve to get to another nearby airport as we were recently informed by one individual who called ahead and were told the fuel was available and when they got their the tank was dry. It has probably been replenished by the writing.
